Exercise with MapRun

The basics (1-2-3)

MapRun (the latest version is “MapRun6”) uses Smartphones to provide a form of orienteering. There are no flags or SI units, so courses are available any time, any day. Like real orienteering, when you Finish you will get your score or finish time, and you will also see your track. Results are automatically uploaded to the MapRun website, so you can compare your run to others.

1 - Install MapRun6 on your smartphone as described here.

2 - Select a Location (see below). Choose a course and if you wish print a map – it will make map-reading much easier but is not essential.

3 - Take your Phone and map to the PRE-Start Area and start the app. Select your chosen course and then tap ‘Go to START’. As you reach the Start area, listen for the beep, then RUN....

Where ?

Garingal has created several local courses on Sydney's North Shore at Fox Valley, West Chatswood, Artarmon, Central Chatswood (see list below for details).  But other clubs and Orienteering NSW have created permanent courses at places such as Centennial Park, Bicentennial Park, Curl Curl Lagoon, Georges Heights in Sydney or in Newcastle and Armidale.  For the full list, go to the ONSW website.

Finally, you can 'do-it-yourself' courses using the new functionality in MapRun6 to create 'QuickStart' (for example when an existing orienteering map for the area does not exist). For more info go to the bottom of MapRun Instructions page.

For Your Safety

There is no event hype to focus yourself: it's just you and maybe a friend.

  • IMPORTANT.... YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY

  • Covid19 - Please only use MapRun courses in ways consistent with Covid-19 restrictions. Always observe social-distancing, especially at the Pre-Start area, near controls and at the Finish.

General risks in orienteering: Both parklands and bushland areas contain trip/fall risks and hazards, so please watch your surroundings. Other visitors, cyclists and dogs frequent urban bushland and parklands. There may be roads to cross and hence vehicles. PLEASE TAKE CARE. On hot days, take extra water and be aware of any signs of heat fatigue.

We suggest you install the "Emergency+" phone app, or other emergency apps such as "what3words", "Where am I".

Conditions of use of NSW MapRun courses:

  • No responsibility or liability is assumed by the contributors to this project (Orienteering NSW and affiliated clubs) or any Landholders on which the maps are located.

  • Children: MUST be accompanied by an adult.

  • Please look after, and help to protect, the parks & bushland areas we use. Follow the rules and requirements of Landholders.

Garingal’s MapRun Courses

  1. Artarmon  Offered originally as a Moonlight Madness during a covid lockdown: Starts from Eastern end of Burra Rd in Artarmon (picnic shelter on grassed area between playground and (out-of-bounds) community garden in Artarmon Parklands (former site of Artarmon Bowling Club).  For details click here.

  2. Central Chatswood  In these times of Covid lockdowns, our worlds seem to be getting smaller and smaller. To celebrate World Orienteering Day 2021 (and week) in our very small worlds, there are now new courses for everyone who lives in the part of world that is 4km from Chatswood. For details click here.

  3. Fox Valley.  The Fox Valley area has everything: beautiful Sydney sandstone bush, rock platforms with magnificent views, steep sections and flat sections, parks, some weird history of planned roads for northern Sydney, and a coffee shop (for take-aways) at the Start/Finish. For details click here.  For details click here.

  4. West Chatswood. The West Chatswood map has been around for years. However, Istvan and Niki have a completely new set of courses, starting at a new park, and using the bushland along the Lane Cove River. For further information see the West Chatswood courses page.  For details click here.
