Saturday, 21 January 2012 - Garingal member Stefan Kuehn welcomed in the new year with this magnificent shot of the fireworks taken from one of the summer series locations along the harbour foreshore. Stefan is a regular competitor in the urban events and also some of the bush events during the year.
"Christmas Party" - the annual gathering for Garingal members is being held at Ron and Barbara Junghans place at Duffys Forest on Saturday 11 February 2012. The party is always well attended. The party commences with an orienteering course in the local area (in this case the bush/streets around Duffy's forest) followed by a BBQ dinner and presentations for club members afterwards. There is a pool there to cool off in after the run which is particularly good for the kids. In the past few years, there has been a short video of the members strutting their stuff at the events during the year. The run starts are between 4 and 5:30pm with dinner afterwards and presentations around 7:30pm. It is a great chance to become acquainted with the other members of the club in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Please RSVP to Ron and Barbara Junghans at

Wednesday, 11 January 2012 - welcome to the new year and another action packed year of orienteering and outdoor pursuits with the Garingal club.
Ross Barr - We start off this year by honouring Garingal member Ross Barr's achievements in 2011. By any measure, Ross had a very impressive year both on the orienteering field and on the administration/planning front. Ross competes in the M65A class which has a large number of competitors and is hotly contested. During 2011, Ross won the NSW Night Championships, the Australian Sprint Championships, the ACT Long Distance Championships, the Oceania Sprint Championships, was 2nd in the Australian 3 Days at Easter and then went onto Hungary to compete in the World Masters Games where he qualified for the M65A final. The picture on the left is Ross competing in the Australian 3 Days in Western Australia. A list of Ross's official orienteering results in Australia can be found here. On the administration side, Ross won the Course Setter of the Year at the OANSW Presentation evening for the unforgettable course he set for the sprint event at Lithgow High School as part of the QB3 event. Not to rest there, Ross is well known as the co-ordinator of the Sydney Summer Series which this year has expanded into the southern and western divisions as well. Hats off to Ross and may 2012 be as equally fulfilling. Summer Events - we are now in full swing with the summer events and they are coming thick and fast. This creates a great opportunity to select events which are convenient in terms of location and timing. The Wednesday summer series events are always popular and the Monday evening sprint series events are also proving to be a hit. Western and Hills have also now commenced the western summer series events. |

Wednesday, 7 December 2011 - Kirribilli - Garingal hosted another summer series thie evening with organiser Rod Eckels setting the course in a favourite location underneath the harbour bridge at Kirribilli. The current La Nina contributed to the natural atmosphere of the event. However, spirits were not dampened and there was a good turnout. Thanks to Rod for organising the event and Ross Duker for again manning the SI gear. National Squad Selection - the Australian Junior Squads were announced this evening, with Garingal's Michele Dawson being selected in the Australian Junior Squad. Contratulations to Michele. Garingal Shirts - the latest shipment of Garingal shirts has arrived. These are the new trimtex shirts which have been imported from Europe. All you have to do is to accost James Lithgow at the next summer series event or send James an email to purchase your shirt. Christmas 5 Days - electronic entries for the Christmas 5 days carnival close on 16 December 2011. What is the Christmas 5 days? Well, this is a low key orienteering carnival held between Christmas and New Year where the runs are very early in the morning. You can elect to enter some or all of the days for the carnival. This years' 5 days is conveniently being held in Newcastle and the Central Coast. So you can motor on up the F3, have a run and then slip off to the beach for a lunchtime and afternoon swim. The courses are being set by the NSW Junior Orienteering squad including day 1 by our very own champion Michele Dawson. Further details and entries can be found on the side bar. Australian Championships - this week we feature Airdrie Long (pictured) who competed this year in the W21AS division. The W21AS division is for those aged 21 and over who enjoy the challenge of a harder navigational course on a reasonably long distance. Airdrie had some great races culminating in third in the premier race, the Australian Long Distance Championships at Badga. |
